Editorial

A year has gone by since our last AGM and such a lot has happened in that time!   I hope you will be able to join us at Mereside for this year’s AGM.   We are celebrating our volunteers this year and will be recognising several individuals who have given their time to helping and supporting young people over many years.   It would be interesting to know what the total number of volunteer hours in Shropshire would be over the past 60 years or so!

In this edition of Chatterbox there is an article about Belle Vue Youth Club which has been running for 60 years and Fusion/Cornerstone in Harlescott Grange, Shrewsbury which has recently celebrated 50 years.

Our volunteers are valuable and valued.   Thank you to all of you for what you do for the young people in your communities.

Dee

AGM 2008

This year’s AGM will once again be held at Mereside Community Centre, Shrewsbury.   The date of the AGM is Wednesday 8th October and the meeting will start at 7.30 pm, with an opportunity to enjoy refreshments and view displays after the meeting.   If you haven’t received your invitation and nomination form, please call the office.   There are several places on the Executive Committee for representatives from our affiliated groups, so please consider who you would like to nominate.

If you would like to bring a display to the AGM, please call us to let us know how many tables, etc you need.   Displays can be put up from 7 pm onwards.   Last year several groups of young people spoke about the activities they had participated in.   If your group would like to speak or perform this year, please let us know.

This year we will be recognising a few of the hundreds of volunteers who are supporting the young people of Shropshire every week.   It isn’t too late for further nominations and another form is enclosed with this mailing.   Please return by 1st October.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this year’s AGM.

CSV Make a Difference Day

Every year, thousands of young people take part in CSV Make a Difference day and give up a day of their time to help others and improve things in their community.   Its all about giving a day of your time - not your money!

This is YOUR chance to:

·         Act on what’s important to you:

·         Change things for the better

·         Get a sense of achievement

·         Get a certificate for your file and add to your CV

·         Learn new skills

·         Make new friends and have fun!

This year on Saturday 25th October we are undertaking an environmental project in the Bridgnorth area.

Why not contact Steve Jones on 01743 342172 for more details and YOU could make a difference.

 Funding Opportunities

Pat has produced an updated sheet which was enclosed with this mailing.   Youth Opportunity Fund round 6, was launched recently.   The closing date is 10th October and if your group has received funding from YOF recently please ensure that an evaluation form was submitted or your group may be disappointed in this round!

YOF is a great opportunity for young people to decide how they would like to use the funding for themselves and for other young people in their area/group.

Equipment for your Club

Did you know that the County Youth Service has an equipment resource which can provide ideas for your Club’s programme?

We have many items available including craft activities, badgemakers, musical instruments, games and an excellent range of camping and outdoor activity equipment.   We will deliver and collect items free of charge and many of the games items are free to borrow.   A small charge is made to cover the cost of raw materials in the craft boxes and we also make a small charge to hire some camping equipment so that we can replace times  when they begin to wear.

If you would like more information, a leaflet is enclosed with this newsletter or you can ring the Store Manager, Ken Corbett, on 01743 761023

GOOD LUCK KATIE!

Katie has been with us on Work Experience two days each week since February and finished at SYA last week.   She will be starting a new job in Shrewsbury at the end of September.   We are delighted for her but will miss her greatly.

Thank you Katie and good luck in the new job!

PS  Katie voluntarily came back in today to help send out Chatterbox!

GOLDEN AND DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FOR TWO OF OUR CLUBS!!

With the attendance of  so many members from past years at their respective recent events, who can imagine the amount of positive influence these clubs and their leaders will have on the future lives of young people.

Fusion - Cornerstone

In July the Church celebrated its Golden Jubilee.   It is situated at the heart of a large housing estate and is very much a community Church which has always been shown in its work with children and young people.   During these years, scores of young people have spent many hours having fun, learning experiences, comparing holidays and, until quite recently, would have been the only time some of these children had been away from the area.

Again, this summer they entered Shrewsbury Carnival with a ‘Nursery Rhymes’ theme and took third place.   Also each year the young people put on a pantomime which is very well attended by local people, councillors and the Mayor of Shrewsbury.

A former Pastor spoke of the sporting events of the club - including football and there was a wonderful exhibition of photographic memories.   Over the last twenty years there has been lots of challenges for the leaders Chris and Roy Whittall but with their faith and understanding of the children from this area they have provided a ‘constancy’.

To complete this happy time, the following week Noah James was born - Chris and Roy’s first grandchild.

 Belle Vue

The club, which was set up in 1948, held an Open Evening and buffet in July to celebrate 60 years.   On display around the rooms, with photos and documents, was some of the history of the club.

All these years on, although some things may have changed, the need for children and young people to have a safe place to meet and enjoy activities and educational experiences is the same as ever.

During the years the club has been housed in several different buildings.   A few years ago a group of people, along with Helen Hatton and some of the young people, formed a committee with the intention of building a new club.   With their great enthusiasm and commitment, they persuaded the Lottery to fund their new club …. and so it continues - with the dedication of volunteers and supporters - maybe for another 60 years!

Support Workers’ Summer

Over the summer support workers have been working on reviewing policies, updating information for clubs and leaders and developing Induction Packs for new clubs and volunteers.   In the next few months these will be available from your support worker.

Introduction to Youth Work

During the last year we ran three Introduction to Youth Work courses.   They were run over two days with a tutorial part way between.   We still feel it is better do it this way rather than over weekly evening sessions as it is more cost effective (petrol, time, etc), more can be covered and the group develops and works well together in a shorter time.   However, if a participant can’t attend the second day then they miss 50% of the course and, therefore, can’t complete the qualification and this has happened to several people.

We have tried to overcome this problem by advertising the dates of all three courses for this year on the Training page of this Chatterbox.   The first course will be on two Saturdays, the course in the Spring will be on two Sundays and the third course will be on Monday evenings.   Hopefully, this gives everyone wanting to do Introduction to Youth Work the time to organise their diaries.   The information session for this term’s course is on Monday 6th October and a flyer is enclosed.

Shropshire Certificate Course in Part Time Youth Work

If you have completed the Introduction to Youth Work course and would like to undertake the Certificate Course, please call Dee at the SYA office.   The introduction dates are Saturday 1st  and 15th November.

Buckingham Palace Garden Party celebrating 100 years of the Territorial Army

On 10th July Diana Harmer and Helena Smith travelled to London to celebrate the centenary of the TA.   They had a wonderful and most memorable day and the full version of their day can be found on our website - www.sya.org.   Diana is secretary at Belle Vue Youth Club and Helena is a support worker for SYA.

FORD YOUTH CLUB

is desperately in need of a paid worker.   For more details and information, please call Steve Jones on 01743 850263

Editorial
Thank you to those of you who have returned the ‘Training Needs’ questionnaire. If you haven’t had a chance to send yours back, we have put another copy on the back of this Chatterbox. It is important to us that we continue offering services that our groups and leaders need and want. Please complete it and return to SYA Office or your Support Worker.

Keeping our children and young people safe on the internet is a concern for many parents and youth group leaders. We are able to offer an interactive session for young people. The training has been developed by CEOP (Child Exploitation Online Protection). If you are concerned about the safety of your young people, call the SYA office and book a session at your club for the Autumn Term.

We want to celebrate volunteering at our AGM in October. Without volunteers, thousands of young people would not have their youth club and all the benefits and fun they enjoy each week. Each year we will recognise and thank personally as many of you as we can. Please have a look at the enclosed nomination form and, if you would like more copies, call the office. And …. talking of volunteers, many congratulations to Sue Coyne from Bridgnorth on her MBE - extremely well deserved!    Dee

PS There are still some dates/activities available on the Activities Programme and Arts Award Programme - call Mike for more details.

CAPITAL FUNDING
Shropshire County Council has set aside a Community Grants budget to provide grants to support local capital projects within Shropshire. Grants will be available to projects which create and/or improve facilities that offer a range of benefits to the community. The first deadline is 31st July.

This year’s
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
is on Wednesday 8th October

at Mereside - 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm
MAKE A NOTE IN YOUR DIARY

Bell Boat Regatta - 5th July 2008
As we started to assemble at Frankwell with grey skies and the words of last night’s weather forecast and ‘Severe Weather Warning’ still ringing in our ears, we were still greeted by smiling faces (admittedly some of these smiles came through gritted teeth).

Eight teams listen to Jamie’s safety brief who, in passing, mentioned that this is going to be FUN with a hint of competition. Training was short, the main skills learnt on the way to the start, but I would say with less than half of the competitors never having been in a BellBoat before, it took little time for the competition to start (did I say competition I meant
FUN).

The weather was, on the whole, brilliant (especially considering the forecast) - only two very heavy down pours which stopped proceedings for a short time. We had a short break for lunch (picnic in the park). We had four rounds with eight teams racing each other in a round robin format, at the end of which left four teams on equal points. So, at this point the newly honed skills were put to the test and the run off produced the following results
Weasels
Severn Young Paddlers (St Mary’s)
The Highwaymen
Severn Young Paddlers 2

The Winners were of course the
Weasels from Norbury  to whom Jamie presented the trophy – so it’s on someone else’s shelf this year. Another brilliant Regatta with all going away with new skills, a little damp in places and maybe a little sun tan.

Teams

The Champions – (Red Cross) The Best of the Best – (Red Cross)
Mighty Morpheus’s – (Red Cross) Top Dog– (Red Cross)
Weasels – (Norbury) The Highwaymen – (Youth Service)
Severn Young Paddlers - (St Mary’s) Severn Young Paddlers 2

Trefonen Youth Club
Welcome to our first real contribution to the “Chatterbox”.
Who are we?
We are a small but enthusiastic bunch of volunteers who, with the help of the SYA (Mike Price) and our local Youth & Families worker (Ian Evans) meet on Friday evenings and put on a variety of activities and opportunities for the youngsters of Trefonen and the neighbouring area during term time.

We try to provide them with experiences and introduce them to new ones which they may not otherwise get an opportunity to attempt. We do this in an environment of friendly support and encouragement with people who donate time to make a difference for these youngsters.

We have had a very busy 10 months and have tried to introduce the youngsters into other experiences, including, with the help of Local Network Fund and the Trefonen Broadplace, a project which introduced the youngsters of the village to film making. These
unsophisticated and amusing films were edited and made available for all to view during our own version of a “Film Premiere”. This project opened up opportunities to utilise equipment and support from the Switch on Shropshire Broadplace initiative allowing the youngsters supervised access to computers and the internet on a regular basis.

Other popular special activities we have introduced are: Clay modelling, Beauty sessions, a variety of craft sessions - Blue Peter has nothing on us! and, last but not least, we have expanded to include a “Wii” on the “big screen” projector. This has opened up a whole new dimension to our computer sessions.

Like most Youth Clubs of today you are only as good as the support you give and receive in your own community. This year we have published a newsletter to let people know what we are about and inform them of special events such as our part in the Trefonen Hill-Walking Event - this was in aid of two very important charity appeals. Whilst we did not make vast sums of money, we believe we put ourselves in a good light in the village.

Where do we go from here?
We are about to start planning our Autumn programme. Aside from attempting to improve on our previously mentioned activities, and a few new opportunities we are going to try, we are always open to suggestions and funding from any organisation, so that we can continue to provide interesting activities.

All the best
Trefonen Youth Club
