ART at Ash to Adderley

Ash to Adderley  AMIES Girls Group undertook another summer project this year

This time the girls chose an Art Project and spent the last three weeks of the summer working on 6 large canvases, which now hang in the Oak room at The AMICA Centre in Ightfield.

The girls also made some cards, which are for sale on behalf of the AMICA centre, and spent a day in Telford.  All this was undertaken with Sara Eade who supported the girls throughout the project.  The photograph shows the girls, Amy and Eli, with some of their work.

Buckingham Palace Garden Party 10 July

to celebrate the centenary of the Territorial Army (TA)

Dressed in our new outfits, including hats, we left the barracks at 10am.  It took ages to get through London to Pall Mall and we arrived outside Buckingham Palace at 3pm.  After a long queue to get in, and then having our ID checked by a policeman, we were inside the gates of Buckingham Palace!  Who would have thought that we would be on this side of the Buckingham Palace railings!  We watched the guard in his red uniform and black busby marching up and down and then as we walked through the Palace Helena whispered ‘Feel the carpet, Diana!’ as our feet sank into the deep red pile.  Then we went out onto a large paved area and down some beautiful shallow, wide stone steps into the grounds.

We wanted a good view of Princess Anne so we stayed at the front of the crowds.  The Yeomen of the Guard, resplendent in their red and gold uniforms, made sure we were all in the right places.  Then the Royal Company of Pike Men and Musketeers of the Royall Artillary marched up and stood to attention along the steps.  Their uniform was red with silver body armour.  (We spoke to one of them later who said that they are ex TA soldiers and are based in London.)

Punctually at 4pm Princess Anne came to the top of the steps and the military band played the National Anthem.  She was wearing a dress and hat of deep turquoise and looked beautiful: petite and very slim.  She spent a long time talking to the people who were presented to her.  Prince Edward was also there but Helena and I didn’t see him.  (I think we were too busy watching Princess Anne.)

Then we went to the large tea tent with green and white striped awning outside and pale net drapes inside.  There were about 20 tea ‘stations’ and a kind man in a black tailcoat ushered us to a station with no queue.  The sandwiches were long and thin without crusts and filled with cucumber and dill, egg and cress, ham and mustard, prawns and salmon rolls.  There were lots of assorted delicious little cakes, strawberry tarts, profiteroles, sponge slices, fruit cake, scones, and chocolate cakes.  We helped ourselves to food using rectangular white plates with a hollow for our tea cups.  Tea was served from urns by girls in black skirts and beautiful pale yellow blouses.  We sat with an elderly lady whose husband had served in the regular army and the TA.  Her grandchildren thought she was sitting at a little table in the Palace taking tea with the Queen!

After tea we strolled through the grounds looking at all the wonderful variety of trees, the beautiful huge herbaceous border, and the sweetly scented rose garden, with a place to sit surrounded by white statues and an enormous urn commemorating the victory at Waterloo.  Then we sat by the lake for a few minutes watching the ducks and moorhens and the sun sparkling on the water.

We visited the loos, also in green and white striped awnings, and inside were two full length mirrors and two beautiful dressing tables in the same polished wood.  ‘Do you think they are from the Queen’s bedroom?’ I asked.

We missed seeing Princess Anne leave, which was a bit disappointing.  The band played the National Anthem again to denote that the Royal Party had left.  The sun shone all the time as the military bands played.  There were lots of beautiful ladies’ outfits and hats, and soldiers uniforms to see.

Then it was 6pm and time to leave.  We stopped inside the Palace for a few minutes to admire the china, urns, portraits and furniture and then we went back on the coach to return to Shrewsbury.  On the way back the sun shone behind the dark rain clouds sending glorious rays of light onto the earth.  What a beautiful way to end a wonderful, memorable day.  We are going too frame our invitations.
